SIOUX LOOKOUT – Sioux Lookout continues to investigate the source of, and best options for removal/remediation, the substance that appeared on the sand at Farlinger Park (Town) Beach several weeks ago.
Initial test results suggest the substance is a petroleum-based product, and likely diesel fuel. As a result, and as a precautionary measure, the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) has directed that the Municipality undertake testing of the raw water supply for BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes) and petroleum hydrocarbons every other week for a twelve-week period. This testing has commenced, and, to date, there has been no evidence of contamination of the water supply.
“The Municipality recognizes the seriousness of this matter, and is taking all prudent steps to ensure the health and safety of residents and the protection of our water supply and the environment in the affected area” advised Ann Mitchell, Municipal CAO, adding, “we will keep the area cordoned-off until such time as we can determine the source and the best options for remediation.”
Next steps in addressing this matter will include further investigation into the potential source(s) of the contaminant and options to remediate the site. The Municipality has retained the services of an environmental engineering firm to help guide this process, and continues to work closely with the Northwestern Health Unit and the MOECC to ensure all necessary actions to protect human health and the environment are being implemented.
