Walking for Fort McMurray

WINNIPEG – Stanley Barkman and a dedicated team of walkers are headed to Fort McMurray Alberta. The team made it into Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Stanley Barkman talks with NetNewsLedger about the journey so far.

While the focus on the journey remains Fort McMurray, there is something else happening at the same time that probably no one expected.

The Journey to Fort McMurray is proving to inspire people from across Canada. One young lady contacted the Walkers to share that seeing what they are doing, she is now planning a cross Canada bike ride to raise awareness about diabetes in the Indigenous community in Canada.

The power to inspire. Stanley Barkman has started on a journey that the young man might not realize is changing people. Barkman hear about the terrible fire in Fort McMurray. The Sachigo Lake resident, living in a northern Ontario First Nation community decided that he needed to do something.

Barkman has never been to Fort McMurray, nor does he know anyone in the Alberta community.

None of that has deterred Stanley Barkman. He spoke to his father, Robert Barkman, he spoke to others in his community, and together they decided to embark on a walk to Fort McMurray.

The goal is to raise some funds for Fort McMurray.

There appears to be a secondary goal forming as Barkman continues to rack up the kilometers on his journey. That goal is sharing inspiration.

In Winnipeg at the Indian Metis Friendship Centre, at a meet and greet event, the soft spoken Barkman is proving that his quiet determination is catching the excitement of a growing number of people.

Those enthusiasts have grown to include Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who Facetimed with Stanley earlier in the week.

Those enthusiasts have grown to include 16 thousand people who have joined the Facebook page supporting the walk.

Barkman thus far appears more content to let his message be spoken by the miles his crew are putting down along Canadian highways as they draw closer to their goal of Fort McMurray.
