TWO HARBORS, MN – LIVING – Mark, Katya, Cedar (13), and Lamar (11) Gordon have lived and cruised on sailboats for over a decade. This family from Two Harbors owns and operates Amicus Adventure Sailing, an adventure sailing business based out of Knife River, MN. On their 40-ft. steel sailboat they have sailed to the Bahamas and back twice and completed numerous sailing voyages on Lake Superior. This spring they will complete the 3rd year of their 3-spring voyaging adventure entitled “Sea Change.” Their mission: to advance the discussion of the local effects of climate change on Lake Superior and its coastal communities, and inspire citizens to take the next step for the planet.
They will launch from Knife River, MN, as soon after May 8 as weather allows. Their crew consists of a mix of young teenagers, ages 12-15, and young adults, ages 18-22. For the chilly month of May they will be sailing in the northern section of the Lake. They will sail to Thunder Bay, ON, and then on to Nipigon, Rossport, Terrace Bay, Marathon, the Slate Islands, and Isle Royale. Along the way they will be stopping to connect with local citizens via public “Boat Tours.” They will also do public presentations and visit schools with their message. They have amassed data on the Lake Superior watershed from universities around the Lake including U of Minnesota/Duluth, Lakehead University, and Michigan Technological University. They will be presenting in public at Mariners Hall at the waterfront on Sunday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m. Open Boat Tours will be on Saturday from 12-5 and Sunday from 10-2. All events are free and open to the public.
