THUNDER BAY – LIVING – EcoSuperior Environmental Programs, OLG Casino Thunder Bay and Pack Pros Plus have teamed up to host a free public event on May 7, 2016 to collect and recycle unwanted electronic waste and old passenger tires.

WHEN: Saturday, May 7 from 10a.m. to 3p.m.

WHERE:  Cumberland street parking lot of OLG Casino Thunder Bay.

This event, held in partnership with Ontario Electronic Stewardship, allows members of the community to safely and responsibly dispose of e-waste and old tires free of charge. EcoSuperior Environmental Programs, OLG Casino Thunder Bay and Pack Pros Plus hosted e-waste collections since 2010 and have diverted over 100,000 pounds of potentially toxic e-waste from local landfills!

E-waste contains mercury, arsenic, lead, cancer-causing dioxins and a host of other toxic chemicals. Our municipal landfill isn’t designed to these hazardous metals and chemicals, which can leach into local water supplies. Taking e-waste to a collection event or collection depot ensures that the materials are managed in a safe and environmentally sound manner.

Tires are also included in this year’s special collection event. Tires diverted from our landfill through the Used Tire Program are recycled and transformed into innovative Ontario-made products like landscape tiles, playground surfacing and athletic flooring.

This is a fundraising event that will help to enable the continuation of hands-on programs to help build environmentally healthy communities in the Lake Superior basin.  Ontario Electronic Stewardship and Pack Pros Plus make donations to EcoSuperior Environmental Programs for the volume of materials collected.  Residents making drop-offs will receive a free gift from EcoSuperior (while supplies last). Volunteers are still required for this event.  Anyone interested in volunteering can contact Shannon at 624-2142.
