Sioux Lookout, ON – On advice received from the Northwestern Health Unit, the Municipality of Sioux Lookout has cordoned-off a portion of Farlinger Park (Town) Beach on Wellington Street as a precautionary measure in response to reports of an unknown substance near the shoreline.
There have been prior instances of such substances appearing at the beach, and previous testing has failed to yield conclusive results. New samples have been taken and are currently undergoing laboratory testing. The Municipality continues to work with the Northwestern Health Unit and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change to assess the situation.
Municipal officials and representatives of the various authorities involved in the matter plan to meet upon receipt of the latest round of test results, with an aim of determining a clear direction moving forward.
At this time there is no reason to believe there is an immediate risk to public safety or to the local water supply; however, the Municipality is restricting access to the affected area until the ongoing investigation has concluded that the area is safe for public use.
The Municipality will provide updates as more information becomes available.
