THUNDER BAY – Spring means thin ice on lakes and rivers. On March 25 at approximately 15:30 Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue was requested by Thunder Bay Police to facilitate a potential ice rescue at the Kamview Overlook Park.
An individual had ventured onto what appeared to be dangerously thin ice.
Thunder Bay Fire had three members don cold water survival suits and utilize a Rapid Deployment Craft (RDC) to make contact.
As the rescue crew neared , the person broke through the ice.
Quick action by rescuers allowed them to pull the person safely onto the RDC and then to shore, where EMS and Thunder Bay Police assumed care. Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue Airboat was readied and staged near the scene but required.
