WINNIPEG, Man. – The Thunder Bay Queens have started 0-2 after a pair of games Friday at the Futures Winter Classic in Winnipeg.
Game 1 of the day saw Thunder Bay fall 3-0 to the Pursuit of Excellence from Kelowna, B.C. before dropping a narrow 3-2 vs. the Regina Rebels in their second contest.
Aden Johnson suffered the loss in goal in the setback vs. POE, who got a goal and an assist apiece from Ali Barrow and Sarah Lecavalier in earning the decision.
Against Regina, the Rebels opened the scoring in the first period only to see Kaylee Grosjean tie it before the frame was complete.
Thunder Bay then fell behind 2-1 through two periods of play.
Karadyn Kiviaho brought the Queens level three minutes into the third only to see Regina notch the game-winner less than a minute later.
Bailey Chenier was in goal in the defeat.
The club’s final round robin contest goes Saturday at 11 a.m. as they take on the Central Plains Capitals from Manitoba.
Meanwhile the Tim Hortons bantam A squad is 0-2 through two days at the Robin’s Donuts tournament taking place in the city.
They dropped a 6-1 decision to the K.C. Sabres in their opener before being doubled up by the Neebing Hawks in their next game.
Peewee Queens affiliate Alexis Paddington notched the lone tally for the bantam A’s vs. K.C.
Kayla Stein notched both markers for the club against Neebing while Grace Power had a pair of assists.
Mya Gowanlock was in goal in both match-ups.
Saturday sees the team in action at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre as they meet the Norwest Stars and Westfort Rangers at 9:30 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. respectively.
Meanwhile the RBC Securities bantam AA and the peewee Queens open up play Saturday in Duluth at the Icebreaker Invitational.
The Grand Rapids Lightning will provide the opposition for the bantam AA’s at 1:15 p.m. before they tangle with the Owatonna Huskies later in the day with puck drop set for 9 p.m.
As for the peewees, their first game also goes against the Lakeville Cougars starting at 11:30 a.m.
Thunder Bay then takes on the Osseo Maple Grove Orioles at 3:45 p.m.
