TROY, Mich. – The Thunder Bay Kings wrapped up their first season in the North American Prospects Hockey League Sunday in Troy, Mich., with a 4-3 come from behind victory by the minor midgets over the St. Louis Selects while majors suffered a 4-1 setback against Omaha AAA, the top team in the under-18 division.
In the under-16 game, Thunder Bay got a pair of third period power play markers to rally vs. St. Louis.
The game was scoreless through the opening frame before Ian Tookenay got the U-16 Kings on the board 23 seconds into the middle stanza.
After the Selects tied it four minutes later, Matthew Difranco put the minor midgets back in front at 11:25.
St. Louis stormed out in the third to knot the affair, then go in front with under six minutes to go.
Taking advantage of a five-minute power play Tookenay and Fletcher Anderson combined to set-up Quintin Loon-Stewardson with the equalizer with 5:27 left.
Tookenay then capped off a three-point day by burying the game-winner a minute and a half later.
Anderson also had three points with a trio of assists.
Seth McKay made 28 saves to record the win as the Kings finished NAPHL action with an 8-14-3 overall mark.
Taking on the top team in U-18 play, the major midget Kings kept in close, but fell to high-powered Omaha AAA.
Omaha led 2-0 after one and 3-0 through two before going up by four in the third.
Jayden Wojciechowski picked up the lone Thunder Bay with 10 minutes to go.
Omaha held the edge in shots on goal by a 30-25 count with Ryan Fanti suffering the setback.
The majors finished 7-16-2 in NAPHL U-18 action.
