THUNDER BAY – LIVING – Dilico Anishinabek Family Care (Dilico) and North Caribou First Nation are pleased to announce the signing of a joint working protocol which will strengthen the working relationship between the agency and the First Nation in providing Anishinabek Child Welfare Services to North Caribou First Nation Band members residing in the District of Thunder Bay. Today’s announcement marks another successful partnership between a First Nation and Dilico. This new beginning is within Dilico’s Mikinaak Customary Care Service Model in providing Anishinabek Child Welfare Services to all First Nations residing in the District of Thunder Bay. In the Mikinaak Customary Care Service Model, services are culturally based. The First Nation community, family and extended family are involved in ensuring a child’s safety and well-being.

The signing of this joint working protocol will embark a new beginning for Anishinabek Child Welfare. This will ensure First Nations exercise their inherent right to care, plan and advocate for their children and community members.

The signing of this joint working protocol occurred in November 2015.

North Caribou First Nation is a remote First Nation community accessible by air. North Caribou First Nation is also known as Weagamow First Nation or Round Lake First Nation is an Oji-Cree First Nation band government who inhabit the Kenora District in northern Ontario, Canada. It is approximately 320km or 202 air miles north of Sioux Lookout Ontario. As of January 2008, the First Nation had a registered population of 928 people, of which their on-reserve population was 677.

Dilico Anishinabek Family Care is a First Nation governed organization. Dilico’s continuum of service is comprised of the following programs and services which are all made available in different capacities that include Health, Mental Health and Addictions, and Child Welfare.

Dilico services all Aboriginal people according to a ministerial mandated geographic jurisdiction, which encompasses the District of Thunder Bay and a portion of the District of Algoma. Dilico’s programs and services are available for Anishinabek residents of any age residing in Dilico’s jurisdiction, and for children in the care of Dilico and their caregivers.
