BLAINE, Minn. – The Thunder Bay Queens will have two teams playing for gold Sunday at the 23rd annual All-American Girls tournament in Minnesota.
Both the Tim Hortons Bantam A and the peewee Queens have advanced to the championship game in their respective divisions.
The bantam A’s earned their way to the final after handling Elk River-Princeton of Minnesota by a 7-1 count Saturday with the peewees edging the Hastings Raiders 1-0 in overtime to punch their ticket to the title contest.
The peewee final between Thunder Bay and Proctor-Hermantown gets underway at 12:30 p.m. while the bantam title game goes at 3:45 p.m.as the Queens tangle with the Centennial Cougars.
Both contests will be held at the Xcel Energy Center, the home of the NHL’s Minnesota Wild, in St. Paul.
In the bantams triumph over Elk River-Princeton, Thunder Bay got goals from seven different skaters to earn the decision.
Isabella Badanai and Jessie Scott scored once and added an assist apiece while Mikaela Chimbakis, Sibley Duckert, Sarah Grieve, Caitlin Olinski and Kayla Maguire-Stein notched single markers.
Taylor Armstrong chipped offensively as well with a pair of helpers.
Mya Gowanlock recorded the win in net for the Queens.
As for the peewees, they began their day Saturday with the narrow 1-0 victory over the Forest Lake Rangers.
Alessia Ricciardi had the game-winning goal five minutes into the contest with Alexis Paddington and Desiree Kamande picking up assists on the tally.
Mykaila George had a brilliant game in net for Thunder Bay in posting the shutout.
Against Hastings, it was another low-scoring affair that saw Paddington supply the difference maker in extra time.
Lindsay Humeniuk posted the shutout in that one.
