THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team came up with a 71-63 win to split the weekend series vs the Winnipeg Wesmen.

Bridget O’Reilly was the top scorer for Lakehead with 18 points, hitting on 3 of her 7 three-point attempts. Gillian Lavoie did a great job on the glass grabbing 9 rebounds and chipping in 5 points.

Local Thunder Bay product Cassandra Soulias had a career-best 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including three 3-pointers.

For Winnipeg, Renetha Burton led with 17 points and 7 rebounds, followed by 14 points and 5 rebounds.

The ‘Wolves led by 33-28 at the half, and kept their defense tight down the stretch to hold on.

Coach Jon Kreiner commented, “Tonight we played closer to 40 minutes than last night and we kept the pressure up for 40 minutes. I still think we need to improve our defence overall but our energy level was great. We got after it on the O boards, pushed the ball hard every possession and did a great job on their key players tonight. It was a great bounce back team win and a great bounce back game for Bridget and Cassandra.”

The women’s team head to Winnipeg’s BOB FM Classic next weekend (Oct 9,10,11) for three games.
