STONEY CREEK, Ont. – SPORTS – The RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA Queens split their two games Saturday at the Stoney Creek Sabres AA Showcase tournament in southern Ontario.
After dropping a 5-3 decision to the Kingston Ice Wolves they battled back to edge the Mississauga Chiefs 2-1.
Against the Ice Wolves, Kingston used the strength of four third period goals to break open a 1-1 tie in skating to victory.
Victoria Darosa put the Queens in front with the lone marker of the first while Kingston tied it in the second.
After Molly Kunnas gave her side the lead again 20 seconds into the final stanza, the Ice Wolves struck three times in a span of a minute to take control.
Kunnas added another midway through the session, but the Ice Wolves tacked on another to round out the scoring.
Cassandra Carangi had two assists in the game.
Josée Robinson started in net for the Queens and suffered the loss allowing four against while Paige Wilson allowed one in relief.
Moving on against Mississauga, Brynne Lambert notched the game-winner three minutes into the second adding to an earlier effort supplied by Mackenzie Lehto.
Wilson stopped 11 of 12 in picking up the win.
With a 2-1-1 record after four games, Thunder Bay now advances to third place bracket and will take on Little Caesars of Detroit Sunday at 7:45 a.m.
The winner of that contest will then play for the bronze medal at the 24-team tourney at 11:15 a.m. vs. either Pittsburgh or the Chicago Young Americans.
Meanwhile the Sportop midget AA Queens dropped the first two contests of a three-game set on home ice vs. the St. Mary’s Academy Flames of Winnipeg.
St. Mary’s blanked Thunder Bay 3-0 in the opener Saturday morning before the Flames took the next match-up by a 3-1 score later in the day.
Game 1 saw the Winnipeg side score all three of their tallies in a 10-minute span in the first period enroute to the decision.
Shots on goal favoured the Queens 17-16 with Aden Johnson suffering the defeat in net.
Game 2 saw the Flames strike quickly grabbing a 2-0 lead after one and carry that cushion into the final frame.
Emilie Varrin brought the home side closer four minutes into the third as she finished off a feed from Sarah Dodic, but St. Mary’s added one late to secure the decision.
Bailey Chenier was in net for the loss.
The Sportop Queens and Flames will wrap-up their series Sunday morning at 10:15 a.m. at Fort William First Nation Arena.
