THUNDER BAY – Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services is marking a milestone.
NALSC reports, “This year marks the founding of Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation (NALSC). It is from the vision of Treaty No. 9 chiefs in the late 1980s, and the hard work and dedication from the many individuals who have contributed to our work over the years that has shaped NALSC to what it is today. NALSC is excited to be celebrating 25 years of providing various legal services.
“In April 1990 when NALSC first its opened doors, the office was a trailer located on the Fort William First Nation reserve. Today, NALSC has offices located throughout the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) territory, and 54 employees to service the 49 First Nations of NAN.
“NALSC has grown steadily from administering the Ontario Legal Aid Plan and legal education, and providing community legal workers in the beginning. Today, NALSC offers law reform services in its alternative justice programs Restorative Justice and Talking Together, and also offers Victim Witness Liaisons, Youth Intervention, and the Community Learning HUB. Recently, NALSC grew once more and now does Gladue reports through the Gladue Worker program.
“As we move forward into the future, the Board of Directors and Staff pledge to continue to work towards fulfilling the vision of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation Chiefs to improve access to justice for all their people.”
A celebration dinner will take place at the Valhalla Inn on Wednesday, August 26th at 5:00 p.m.
