Heat WarningTHUNDER BAY – WEATHER – A Heat Warning remains in effect for the southern portion of Northwestern Ontario.  The weather service states that the temperature, with the humidity factored in will be in the mid-thirties.

The weather is hard on seniors, young children and homeless people. Thunder Bay does not have, like many other cities, set protocols for Heat Advisories and Warnings as well as for Extreme Cold Warnings during the winter.

Heat Warning in effect for:

  • City of Thunder Bay
  • Kenora – Nestor Falls
  • Sioux Lookout – Savant Lake
  • Dryden – Ignace
  • Vermillion Bay
  • Sandy Lake – Pikangikum
  • Superior West
  • Red Lake – Ear Falls
  • Atikokan – Quetico Park

A period of hot daytime temperatures and warm overnight lows will occur today and Friday. Daytime highs will reach 29 degrees or more, with overnight lows in the upper teens. Humidex values will be in the mid thirties. Conditions will return to more comfortable values by Friday evening as a light southeasterly flow off of Lake Superior develops, with temperatures forecast to dip to as low as 11 degrees early Saturday morning.

Watch for symptoms of heat illness, which include
– dizziness or fainting, nausea or vomiting
– headache
– rapid breathing and heartbeat
– extreme thirst and
– decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine.
If you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Water is best.

Drink plenty of liquids especially water before you feel thirsty to decrease your risk of dehydration. Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration.

Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
