THUNDER BAY – Anishinaabe – Darius Ferris is seeking the responsibility as Deputy Grand Chief with Nishnawbe-Aski Nation. The NAN election for Grand Chief and Deputy Grand Chief is on August 12th.

NetNewsLedger has offered candidates the opportunity to share their platform with our readers and viewers.

Darius Ferris is from Constance Lake First Nation. He brings experience from three terms on the Constance Lake First Nation Council, as well as his experience with Matawa and KKets.

Ferris says, “Now is the time for us to move beyond our divisions and find our common voice. Our unity is our strength. Divisions amongst us bleed us, weakening our capacities, and open us to harm. As Deputy Grand Chief I will promote NAN’s message, your message, to our treaty partners. Our Lands, resources and our talented citizens of all ages are our inheritance”.

“As Deputy Grand Chief, I will work together with you to build the infrastructure that our families need so that they may prosper, enjoy wellness; and embrace life now and into the future. Prosperity and living well demands that our people may access community-based opportunities for post-secondary education, healthcare, recreation, job creation, social programs, and our seniors to be able to age in place – on the Land and by the water”.

“As Deputy Grand Chief I will assert our jurisdiction. Now is the time for us and not outside interests to decide the fate of our people and our communities on all matters. We will not appease an agenda for developing our communities which is written by outside governments and industry. COO needs to hear this. AFN needs to hear this.”

“Now is the time for the mainstream to learn, understand and appreciate the talents, knowledge and skills of our people. Our ways of gaining skill and our ways of promoting what we know differ from the mainstream. I will bring this message and take this action in my platform once elected: Let us move the grassroots’ constitutions forward”.
