KENORA – Greg Rickford, the Conservative MP for Kenora is going to face off against some political veterans in this fall’s election. The Liberals have nominated Bob Nault as their candidate. The New Democrat favourite in the riding has to be Howard Hampton who declared his candidacy for the nomination on Friday.
On Sunday, in front of a crowd of Liberals at the Kenora Travelodge, Nault was nominated as the Liberal candidate for the Kenora riding for the upcoming 2015 General Election. Bob Nault is the former Minister of Indian Affairs and MP for Kenora-‐Rainy River for 16 years.
Nault stated, “I’m honoured and proud to once again represent the Liberal Party of Canada in Kenora. Today, we start the real work of speaking to Northerners about the problems facing our region and our plan to address those issues. Under the leadership of Justin Trudeau, we will present a plan more in line with Northern values.”
When asked why Mr. Nault wanted to return to politics, Nault had this to say, “Simply put, I’m running to put this riding back on track. After taking a good look at what is happening here in the north, it is clear that our region is falling further and further behind. With unemployment rising, health care problems continuing to face our region, and aboriginal peoples continuing to be excluded from the economy, I have seen enough.”
“I couldn’t stand by and watch our region deteriorate without trying to fix things for our children and our grandchildren.”
Since announcing his candidacy in January, Nault has been consulting residents of the Kenora riding on issues they see as important to the region. He plans to continue this consultation phase over the next few months as he develops his Northern platform.
“We have been building our team and building our plan in the riding. We have a very strong team. We’re excited to get moving and growing over the months ahead.”
