WAPEKEKA FIRST NATION – It has been an emotional week in Wakekeka First Nation. Last week, the community’s school burned down.

The entire community is pouring out the pain and desperation from their hearts over the fire and its impact on students and the community.

One young student, at a community meeting has asked, “When will we have a new school – we want to go to school; when will we be able to go to school again?”

One of the first steps is saving this school year. The fire coming toward the end of the year has many concerned that they won’t be able to finish the year.

“I want my children to finish their education here at home; I don’t want anyone to take my children anywhere else. We encourage our children to get their education,” shared one of the parents.

There is a team in the community today along with guests. Minister Greg Rickford is heading the federal government team. Last week, the Minister reported to NetNewsLedger that the federal government will work toward solutions to save the school year in the community.

Officials from Nishwawbe-Aski Nation and Serpent River First Nation Chief Isadore Day who is running for Ontario Regional Chief is also in the community working toward solutions.
