THUNDER BAY – Do you have a business idea that will be the next big thing? Are you thinking of starting your own business in the near future but don’t know where to start? If so, Lakehead’s Faculty of Business Administration has just the thing for you: Free Start Your Own Business Workshops.
The Faculty of Business Administration, with the support of Small Business Consulting Services (SBCS), Northern Ontario Heritage Fund (NOHF), and many other community partners, including the Community Economic Development Commission, are hosting free business planning workshops open to everyone.
On Monday evenings from February 28 to March 21, 2011, workshops will help regional citizens turn their business ideas into reality and promote entrepreneurial activity in Northwestern Ontario. Each session features a local business professional to share their expertise, and then the audience is invited to participate by asking questions. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Part I: 7:00 – 7:45 p.m.
How do you know if your idea will fly? Differentiating between an idea and a business opportunity. Presented by Professor Ken Hartviksen, Faculty of Business Administration, Lakehead University.
Part II: 8:00 – 8:30 p.m.
How the Thunder Bay CEDC can help you. Presented by Karen Hogan, Development Officer with the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission.
Session 2: March 7

The art of business planning: Do’s and dont’s of an effective business plan. Presented by Royden Potvin, Manager of Thunder Bay Ventures (Community Futures Development Corporation).
Part II: 8:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Turning your passion into your business. Presented by Andrew Kondor, President of Kondor Model Products. Andrew is a successful, local entrepreneur and he will share his experiences about how he turned his passion into his business.
Session 3: March 14
The debits and credits of preparing a financial forecast. Presented by Dave Rodeghiero, Senior Manager of Assurance and Advisory Services, Grant Thornton LLP.
Session 4: March 21
Considering the tax and legal implications of your business. Presented by Brian MacIvor, Barrister and Solicitor, MacIvor, Roddy, Harris LLP.
