FORT WILLIAM FN – Newly elected Fort William First Nation Chief Peter Collins is talking education, and solutions for the James Street Bridge as his first priorities moving forward with the new Council.

“It is a great honour that I welcome you here today,” said the Chief. “We need to invest in your youth and in our future.”

I also think about our Elders so that their life and their way forward is a healthy one,” added the Chief.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us, investing in economic development,” added Chief Collins.

“It is time for us to take charge of our destiny and our economic future. I still believe we need to invest in education and in our youth,” continued the Chief.

On the issue of the James Street Bridge, Chief Collins says that there needs to be a solution. The Chief is not supportive of taking the legal path forward.

Chief Collins says he has already started talking with CN Rail and is looking for both a short term, and longer term solutions.

The Chief has not spoken to Thunder Bay Mayor Keith Hobbs since being elected.

Newly elected Councillor Michelle Solomon says that she is just getting her feet grounded, and is excited, nervous and looking forward to making changes.

One of the two new members of the FWFN Council, Solomon says that part of her learning curve is finding out what programs and policies are in place.

The official ceremony for the swearing in of the new Chief and Council will be on Saturday on Fort William First Nation.
