THUNDER BAY – “It is all about protecting yourself,” says Guardian Angels Canada’s Ian Hodgkinson. The Guardian Angels have a goal of making our city a safer place.

Often it is simply because there is a presence on the streets, that the downtown streets will be safer. The group of trainees, gathering at the Angel’s May Street headquarters are not there because they want to fight crime, they are there because they care about our city, and are learning skills that help keep them safe.

The training is defensive self protection. Getting in the position to get away from a potential threat. It is the kind of training that can be beneficial in all walks of life.

There are some who think that the Guardian Angels are vigilantes. Hodgkinson says nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is the people training for the Guardian Angels are simply residents who are willing to step up and help.

The Guardian Angels seek simply to become good role models in our society.

Hodgkinson says, “In May there will be classes open to the public”.

To motivate teachers, parents and children to create a safer, more powerful future through our programs focused on personal safety, civic contribution, value development and cyber security. To bring violence prevention programs to schools across America for the benefit of students, families, and teachers. To serve as a resource for training teachers in violence prevention at institutions of higher learning.
The Plan

Through increased partnership with educational, business, cultural and religious institutions in our communities, we will solidify and expand our pragmatic and positive role model programs. We will expand and enhance our programs focused on personal safety, neighborhood safety, cyberspace safety and civility, with a special emphasis on overcoming social and educational adversity. In concert with our nation’s schools, we will continue our groundbreaking work to develop curricula illustrating and documenting the benefits of violence prevention.
