THUNDER BAY, ON – Daily lectures and mounding schoolwork are both aspects of student life that any college student can relate to. Whether it is essays, assignments, exams or major presentations, school can be at times very stressful. Quite often, it is what students decide to do in their off time that can make or break their overall school experience. I had no idea that there were so many ways I could spend my time at the College outside of the classroom. I was recently pleased to discover that there are a variety of clubs and extra-curricular activities that I could get involved in.
Perhaps the most charismatic of all groups at Confederation College is the Performing Arts Club. This year, I was able to take part in the annual Follies production, an experience I will not forget. Having joined late in the production season and not knowing anyone in the club at the time, I was naturally somewhat nervous. Not long into my first meeting with the group I was welcomed with open arms.
I’m not much of an actress, so I took on the role of working backstage. Whether it was helping all the performers with quick changes, or setting up props on-stage, there was always something to be done. It’s a whole different world from a backstage perspective; a hectic and exhilarating experience combined to what may be best described as “organized chaos.” Backstage there are people running from one side to the other, quickly trying to change into their next costume and sometimes reading over their lines before the next scene. I enjoyed gaining a more thorough understanding of the complexities that go into putting on such a production.
Of course working backstage was a lot of fun, and a great experience but what I really took in from Follies 2015 are the friendships I made. There are so many unique and amazing people who are a part of this club. Joining this club expanded my group of friends within the college, something that I’ve never really had, outside of my class peers. Making these new friends gave me a true feeling of involvement, and really highlighted my experience here at Confederation College. I think back now and can’t imagine the rest of my year if I hadn’t been a part of Follies 2015 and how much I have gained from meeting the cast. The Performing Arts Club was something that everyone could look forward to at the end of the day, something to get your mind off of an upcoming exam or the stressful thought of a presentation.
I’m not the only one who sees the benefit of getting more involved in the College community. Some of my fellow club members shared their reflections on their experience too:
· “I’m more on the shy side. It’s a great way to meet people for sure!” – Rebekah Gan, first time participant
· “I generally don’t like talking in front of a large group of people, and I never did like public speaking. But I’m getting more comfortable with it. People should come out to see what it’s like. It’s definitely worth it!” – Cody Locke, returning participant
Now you may be reading this thinking “That’s great, but I’m not interested in the performing arts.”

The Performing Arts Club is just one of many great clubs that Confederation College has to offer. Ranging from a student sustainability initiative club to tabletop gaming, the opportunities for extra-curricular activities are vast and can meet the needs and interests of any student.
So next time you’re feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork, are looking to try something new, learn a skill or make a new friend, stop by the Student Union (SUCCI) and join a club.
