Jylisa Williams sets new OUA single-season scoring record
Guelph, Ont – SPORTS – The Lakehead University women’s basketball team kept on passing milestones along their journey of success this season, winning 77-73 over the Guelph Gryphons and eliminating them from playoff contention.
Coach Jon Kreiner stated, “Tonight’s game was very physical. We battled hard through some tough situations and closed out on a hard fought game on the road. I am very proud of how composed we stayed all game and how hard we battled. Jylisa stayed the course and dominated the fourth quarter, Corina Bruni made great plays all night and rookie Bridget O’Reilly played tough defense on MacTavish in the second half. To top it off, I couldn’t be prouder of Jylisa Williams for breaking the single-season scoring record.”
For all-star guard Jylisa Williams, it was another record-setting event. This time she surpassed the single-season scoring record of 506 points. On Friday night she poured in 31 points to push her season total to 525. Williams also grabbed 12 rebounds with 4 blocked shots.
Guelph’s defense was near airtight in the first quarter, limiting Lakehead to 10 points, Guelph leading by 8 after the first quarter. Williams picked up 2 quick fouls in the first quarter, and was limited to 9 points in the first half.
Back to back three’s by Corina Bruni and Katie Ulakovic late in the second quarter briefly gave Lakehead the lead, 30-29, but the Gryphons regained it, 35-32 at the half.
After building their lead to 9 after three quarters, Guelph’s defense finally broke down in the final quarter, as Lakehead put up 30 points and closed out the game strong.
In the final 90 seconds, Williams hit on four consecutive free throws, and Bruni hit two as well, on top of coming up with a clutch steal in the last 30 seconds of the game. Bruni finished the game with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
For the Gryphons, Katherine MacTavish scored 19 points with 11 boards.
Lakehead will rematch against Guelph tomorrow evening at 6pm.
