OTTAWA – SPORTS – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves women’s basketball team clamped down early, and kept the pressure on the Carleton Ravens for the majority of the game, coasting to a 52-40 win on Saturday night.
Lakehead got up 16-4 after first quarter and kept on rolling, up 28-14 at halftime. All doubt was removed as Lakehead limited the Ravens to 4 points again in the third quarter while putting up 18 more of their own.
Jylisa Williams scored a game-high 28 points with 6 steals and 5 rebounds, and sat for most of the fourth quarter after 30 minutes’ work. Essa Jacobsen grabbed 8 rebounds.
Lindsay Shotbolt was limited to 12 points on 4-of-24 shooting while pulling down 9 rebounds.
Lakehead’s defense forced Carleton into 28 turnovers, while they committed 21 of their own.
Coach Jon Kreiner:
“This was a great weekend sweep and I am very proud of how our ladies came into Carleton and executed our defensive game plan. Jylisa was aggressive and attacked the hoop tonight and our pressure defense was as good as I’ve ever seen it.”
With the win the women’s team (8-3) remains on top of the OUA Central division and just ahead of McMaster (7-4).
The Thunderwolves return home to play Algoma next weekend (Friday, Jan 23).
