THUNDER BAY – What looked like an LU home victory turned into the opposite for the Women’s Volleyball team, as they were defeated by Waterloo 3-2 (25-20, 14-25, 25-20, 20-25, 13-15) on Friday evening at the Thunderdome.
Lakehead was led by Vanessa Chorkawy with 24 points (17 kills, 4 stuff blocks, 3 aces), followed by a huge performance from hometown senior Karla Brayshaw with 16 points (12 kills, 3 stuff blocks and 1 ace). Jorie Daymond had 9 kills and 2 aces, while libero Nicole Vercaigne had 19 digs.
This match was certainly one that entertained Lakehead’s loyal fans, as the women’s team played their 5th match of the year that has gone to 5 sets. It made for very exciting volleyball, as momentum swung from Lakehead to Waterloo and back again. Both teams combined for 138 digs in the match.
Lakehead Coach Chris Green is intent on giving the Lakehead fans continued exciting volleyball, but more importantly, a home win, “I was very proud of our young ladies tonight. They showed composure, growth and confidence. We had both Vanessa Chorkawy and Karla Brayshaw show great toughness and leadership coming back from injuries last week to perform very well. The girls have worked hard; this week everyone has focused on winning these long matches. This is our 5th 5 set match of the year and we have logged some very big minutes. It will pay off for us, I believe that. Our fans are treated to very exciting volleyball, now we have to win one for them as well as for ourselves.”
Lakehead with take on the Laurier Golden Hawks tomorrow evening at the Thunderdome at 7 pm.
