Sudbury, Ont – SPORTS – The LU Thunderwolves women’s basketball team fell short on Saturday evening, 66-61 to the Laurentian Voyageurs.
The ‘Wolves were slow to get going against a stifling Voyageur defense, as the home side went on a 14-2 run to begin the game.
Lakehead would bounce back in the second quarter to come back within one point, trailing 25-24 at the break.
Despite Lakehead’s best efforts to claw back into the game, Laurentian kept their foot to the floor, draining three pointers at every turn. Danielle Harris and Adrienne Moreau shot a combined 11-for-20 from beyond the arc and scored over half their teams points with 46 between them.
Lakehead’s offense was run through Jylisa Williams, who scored 29 points, but did shoot below her season average from the floor, hitting 9 of 25 shots. She made up for it from the free throw line, hitting 11 of 12. Williams made a team-high 4 assists with 5 steals.
While the Voyageurs were a scorching 46% from long range, Lakehead struggled, going 2-of-15 (13%). Such numbers allowed them to overcome making 26 turnovers to Lakehead’s 14.
Coach Jon Kreiner said, “Laurentian played a very good game tonight. Credit to them for hitting shots and making us pay for our mistakes. We allowed a teams best shooter to hit 5 second half threes and we got got out-worked from the jump of to finish. This game is going to resonate for a month as we move into break so we need to learn from it and move on.”
