Kingston, Ont – SPORTS – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves women’s volleyball team got their second win of the season Saturday, 3-1 over the RMC Paladins (28-26, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21).

Lakehead fought hard into extra points in the first set, eventually gutting out a 28-26 win to take the early lead, which they then extended to 2-0 after an easier 2nd set victory.

“Full marks for the girls working hard at playing a clean game tonight,” said coach Chris Green. “Other than some ill-timed runs that forced games to go longer than they should have, the overall concentration and focus was a lot better today.”

After the Paladins rebounded in the 3rd set to force another, Lakehead closed the door for good.

Jen Casey led Lakehead with 19 kills, 3 service aces for 22 points and 16 digs.

Jessica Korchak was a beast at the net, making 7 blocks to go with 8 kills (on 15 attempts) and a service ace for a total 16 points, a personal best for the young rookie.

Nicole Behnke led the Paladins with 21 points (17 kills).

Coach Chris Green:

“The ladies played against an RMC team that was relentless on defence and forced us into multiple attack rallies. Vanessa Masters did a good job of moving the ball around and our hitters did a much better job of being efficient. The team wanted to work really hard and get a win heading into the break, and they accomplished that. Full marks to them for that and now we can get into the gym and focus on corrections and moving onto the exam period for the athletes.”

Thus concludes the women’s OUA schedule prior to the winter exam break. They will resume play on January 10 in the Thunderdome versus Ryerson.
