THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – It was a solid start Friday for the three Thunder Bay Queens teams competing in tournaments as they went a combined 3-0-1.
After the Harbor Center Cup in Buffalo, N.Y., the midget A Queens had their schedule altered due to the massive amount of snow that that area had received the past few days as they only played one game Friday, a 2-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons.
In that contest Whitney Scott’s second goal of the contest, with 13 minutes remaining was the game-winner vs. Guelph.
Scott also scored in the opening period while Erika Gilbert countered for the Gryphons in the middle frame.
They have two games scheduled Saturday vs. the West Seneca Wings and Rochester Grizzlies.
Meanwhile at the All-Americans Girls tourney in Blaine, Minn., the Tim Hortons peewee and Manshield bantam A Queens were impressive to begin play.
The peewees took their opening contest a 6-0 count over the Chaska Chanhassen Storm Hawks.
Olivia Nicholl paced the Thunder Bay attack with two goals and an assist.
Kendra Fortin, Grace Grosjean, Alexis Paddington and Bella Caragni also scored for the Queens with Grosjean adding a pair of helpers as well.
Camryn Williams posted the shutout.
Their next contest is 12:30 p.m. Saturday against the Winnetka Warriors.
As for the bantam A side they opened up with a 2-1 decision over the Duluth Icebreakers before rallying late to earn a 3-3 tie with the North East Predators of Winnipeg in their second contest Friday.
After Jessie Page opened the scoring for Thunder Bay in the first against the Icebreakers, teammate Jillian D’Angelo extended the lead at 10:49 of the second.
Duluth added one late in the second, but Samantha Stubbs shut the door the rest of the way for Thunder Bay to record the win.
In the club’s second game the Queens rallied three times vs. the Predators to pick up a point.
Mackenzie Christie, in the first, Mackenzie Lehto in the second and once more with 22 seconds remaining in regulation scored the goals for Thunder Bay with Stubbs playing in net.
The bantam A side returns to action Saturday against a yet to be determined opponent.
