Williams dominant once more with 35 points, 19 rebounds
THUNDER BAY – The women’s basketball team knocked off the #6 McMaster Marauders on Friday evening, 75-60.
Once again, it was the Jylisa Williams show, as she was everywhere, scoring and rebounding, amassing 22 points and 12 rebounds in the first half. Last week’s OUA Female Athlete of the Week would finish the game with 35 points and an astounding 19 rebounds (7 offensive).
Lakehead led 42 -38 at halftime.
Essa Jacobsen and Jylisa Williams combined for 37 of Lakehead’s 42 points in the first half.
Lakehead opened things up in the third quarter, going on a 14-2 run to establish a solid lead they would not relinquish.
Essa Jacobsen finished with 18 points after putting up 15 in the first half.
The game was defined by Lakehead’s defense, which generated a lot of their offense in the form of lay ups and fast break opportunities, while limiting McMaster’s inside game.
Despite shooting poorly from the free throw line (13-29), Lakehead was solid on defense, only sending the Marauders to the line 9 times (McMaster hitting 6).
Lakehead also struggled from the 3-point line (0-9), but luckily McMaster wasn’t much better, going 4 of 22.
Danielle Boiago scored 28 points to lead the Marauders.
LU out-rebounded McMaster 41-25. The ‘Wolves shot 46% to McMaster’s 37% from the field.

“Like last year’s playoff matchup, we had a good start but struggled for a bit. I’m really proud of how we stayed the course and kept our energy up. Our third quarter was awesome. Our defense was great and we scored out of it on a night when we struggled from the line [FT and 3FG]. Cassandra Soulias was great off the bench and Essa Jacobsen was a force in the paint. Jylisa Williams continues to show she’s an elite player in the CIS, and did everything for us tonight.”
The teams will rematch tomorrow evening at 6pm at McMaster’s Burridge gymnasium.
