THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead University Thunderwolves women’s basketball team are off to a 2-0 start in the OUA regular season following a 62-46 win over the York Lions.
Jylisa Williams was once again the driving force for the ‘Wolves, scoring 25 points with 8 rebounds, 4 assists in 28 minutes of play.
Tight Game in First Half for Thunderwolves
The Lions and T-Wolves drew even after 20 minutes of play, tied at 24.
Lakehead would break things open with an 18-point 3rd quarter, followed by 20 points more in the fourth, while limiting the Lions to 22 points in the second half.
Essa Jacobsen scored 12 points with 9 rebounds, and Katelyn Andrea had 9 points with 4 rebounds. Andrea played a team-high 34 minutes.
For the Lions, Shauney Fischer was 5-of-7 from the field for 11 points to go with 11 rebounds.
Lakehead out-rebounded York 42-30, and committed 18 turnovers to York’s 20.
Framing his comments in the weekend’s context, coach Jon Kreiner was less than enthused about his team’s output Saturday, “Our energy really dropped today. We were flat, played straight legged and reached on defence”.
“We got the W and Jylisa was awesome in the second half but we need to get more out our bench.”
The women’s team travel to Hamilton next weekend to take on McMaster.
