Lakehead ThunderwolvesTHUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead University women’s volleyball team started strong, but would waver as the match wore on against the McMaster Marauders, eventually conceding a 3-1 loss (25-19, 22-25, 19-25, 14-25).

“Well tonight we made corrections on the number 1 tactical situation Mac used to hurt us last night,” said coach Chris Green. “We were able to manage the step arounds better but on the flip side we gave the Mac Leftsides [Jedrzejewska and Mastroluisi]  too much room.  We served tougher but did not serve the right target when we were within a couple points.”

Joanna Jedrzejewska led the Marauders with 17 kills and 10 digs, while Lauren Mastroluisi made 8 kills with 15 digs.

For Lakehead, fourth year senior Jen Casey put together a stronger match than Friday’s, making 21 kills with 5 errors on 53 attempts. Add to her line an ace, 8 digs and 1 stuff block for a game-high 23 points.

Jasmine Fox was next for the ‘Wolves, getting 11 kills on 33 swings with 4 digs and 5 blocks for 16 total points.

Green continues, “All of our issues are part and parcel with a young group, learning their way in this game. We had better energy tonight, better focus, better execution, fewer errors, but none the less errors at the most crucial times.”

Setter Vanessa Masters made 34 assists, 8 fewer than the opposing setter (Caitlyn Genovy). Libero Breanne Hilhorst had 18 digs with 2 assists for the ‘Wolves.

“I am proud of the girls focus tonight and we will continue to build off the positives in our play working to get a well rounded style of play. This one’s done, now we get ready for Guelph.”

The women play host to the Guelph Gryphons next weekend
