THUNDER BAY – Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy expressed his sorrow and frustration at the recent passing of a 20-year-old high school student in Thunder Bay this past weekend.
“My condolences to the family and community of this young man who was taken from us too early in a senseless act,” Ontario Regional Chief Beardy said. “Our young people need to be protected while they are away from their families and communities attending high school. This is a reoccurring crime and something must be done to help our young people who don’t have access to a secondary education in their home communities.”
Daniel Randall Levac of Sachigo Lake First Nation was fatally stabbed outside a movie theatre on Friday night in Thunder Bay. He was a student at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School which is operated by Northern Nishnawbe Education Council (NNEC). DFC school officials have created an extensive safety net for students including a 24-hour on-call service if they need help.
Students from Sachigo Lake were sent to their home community yesterday so they can grieve with their families.
