Nipigon ElksNIPIGON – The Nipigon Elks hockey season has gone really well so far. The league has been really competitive this year. The Elks coaching staff is different this year. With Doug Kashak stepping down Greg Stein took over. The other coaches with Greg on the Elks are Cam Girvan and Jason Nicol. The Elks season has gone really well.

The Elks play almost every Friday night at the Nipigon Community Centre at 7:30pm. I have had Moriah Harvey, Bronwyn Nuttal and Jory Zechner sing O’Canada before the games. I hope the have one of them sing at the Elks next home game on January 14th.

Here is my report for the Elks last game played on Friday December 17th against the Thunder Bay Junior Stars. The Junior Stars are into their second season in the league.

It only took the home town Elks twenty nine seconds to score. Their goal came from Jesse Asunmaa. The Stars Pat Miekle would tie the game up at the 2:02 mark. The visiting Stars got a goal from Sean Moulton to go up 2-1. The Elks Brandon Pohill scored to tie the game at 2-2 at the 19:02 mark of the first period. With only 18 seconds left in the first period George Ossachuk scored a short handed goal to put the Elks up 3-2 and end the first period.

The second period would see only one goal scored and it came from Nipigons George Ossachuk getting his second of the game and put the Elks up 4-2. There was a fight between the Stars Sean Moulton and the Elks Alex Jeffery. Sean Moulton was given two minutes for instigating, five for fighting and a game misconduct, while Alex Jeffery was given five for fighting and a game misconduct. The Stars coaches Andrew Timko and Dave Simpson disputed the call and were also given game misconducts. After two periods of play it was 4-2 for Nipigon.

Brandon Pohill would notch his second of the game and put the Elks up 5-2. Al Tronson scored for the Stars and brings the Stars within two at 5-3, but that would be as close as the Stars would get.  The Elks Eric Rubach and Eric Boyko scored the Elks last two goals.

The Elks first game in 2011 is against first place Northern Hawks. Nipigon trails the first place Hawks by six points. Their next home game is Friday January 14th against the Thunder Bay Screaming Eagles. See you all there.
