KENORA, ON – Children taking part in Science North summer camps in Kenora greeted a special visitor Wednesday afternoon. Greg Rickford, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, stopped by Evergreen School today to chat with camp staff and participants, and experience some of the engaging and exciting hands-on science experiences that Science North is so well-known for. This year, across Northern Ontario, Science North will reach an estimated 2,200 children, between the ages of 4 and 11, through summer camps -this includes over 700 kids enrolled in camps in Northwestern Ontario.

“Credit where credit is due. This is Science North doing good outreach across the region. They have a magnificent facility that the federal government has been involved in supporting over the course of time,” said Minister Greg Rickford. “It has always been my priority, especially since I am responsible for FedNor, to help kids access some of the cool experiments that are going on. We have 200 local kids here learning about science. They’re operating on technology that is supported by FedNor. I couldn’t be more thrilled they are taking steps so that kids up here have access to the science and technology that children in Sudbury have access to if they visited Science North.”

“Growing our reach in Northern Ontario is a strategic priority for us,” said Guy Labine, Science North CEO.  “This year Science North is in Kenora for a total of five weeks offering summer camps to 188 children.  We also provide school outreach programs to this area, including programs to First Nations schools. Science North is also exploring other opportunities with respect to new community partnerships. These include the possibility of bringing one of our travelling exhibitions to Kenora and Northwestern Ontario, as well as the potential expansion of a trading program, that has seen much success in our Sudbury science centres, to other Northern Ontario attractions.  This presents some exciting possibilities for our science centre and our potential partners in Kenora such as the Lake of the Woods Discovery Centre, as well as other attractions and organizations across the North.”

Summer Science Camps continue this month in many communities across Northern Ontario.

Science North is a registered charitable organization that relies on community support to deliver programs, such as Summer Science Camps across all of Northern Ontario.  As such we gratefully acknowledge the generous contribution of our Summer Science Camp supporter, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.  Science North Summer Science Camps in Kenora are also supported by the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board.
