Summer School at Confederation College

THUNDER BAY, ON – A partnership between the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, Lakehead Public Schools and Confederation College is giving high school students the opportunity to pick up a college credit while also recovering a high school credit.

Because of Summer C.L.A.S.S., Nick Peterson will be able to graduate high school this year allowing him to start the Welding Techniques program at Confederation College this September.Summer C.L.A.S.S. (Centre for Learning and Student Success) is a unique opportunity for high school students to experience college without missing any time during the school year.

Through the support of the School, College, Work Initiative (SWCI) the program offers a summer experience which helps students to gain not only their lost high school credits, but also the skills and confidence they need to make informed decisions about going to college.

“Summer C.L.A.S.S. provides students of both school boards a chance to get a glimpse of what college life would be like, while also meeting their high school requirements through credit recovery,” said Jim Keyes, a Summer C.L.A.S.S. teacher.

“It’s great preparation for the students’ transition to post-secondary education and allows them to explore what college program might be a good fit.”

This year, 140 students are participating in the credit recovery program, up from 90 students last year.

Filling all available seats, 60 lucky students are doing so through the dual-credit option, which was open to summer students going into grade 11 or 12 in the fall.  The choice of college credits includes:

·         Easy, Healthy Cooking – learning to prepare healthy, nutritious meals.
·         Applications for College Success – developing skills to be able to use required college computer applications like Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
·         Tastes of Skilled Trades – introducing students to a variety of skilled trades such as carpentry, welding and motive powers.

These programs are being offered at no cost to students and are required courses for some college programs.  Summer C.L.A.S.S. runs for three weeks until July 25th.
