THUNDER BAY – Impact of last winter’s cold weather is still being felt in Thunder Bay. City Manager Tim Commisso shares, “This winter was brutal and in my 34 yrs I’ve never dealt seen a situation where at the end of June we are projecting a YE deficit of $6M – $3 M after restraint measures”.
Thunder Bay and Winnipeg both experienced water pipes freezing. In Thunder Bay, one area impacted has been Centennial Park.
Paul Fayrick the Manager, Parks Division in the Infrastructure & Operations Department states, “The water main at Centennial Park froze this past winter necessitating the shutdown of all water to the buildings in the park. We installed portable toilets in the park and have had to rely on them while we wait for repairs”.
“Sewer & Water were in last week and replaced a section of pipe; however, when the water was turned back on a number of leaks were discovered. They have developed a plan to reestablish water to our work shop later this week (it is close to the original break) and to assess the amount of additional damage that needs to be repaired in order to re-open the washrooms at the Chalet,” adds Fayrick.
