THUNDER BAY – As you are busy in your annual spring cleaning ritual, it is a great way to trim the house of stuff you don’t need.

This spring, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore are urging spring-cleaners to think twice before taking items to the dump.

This follows an extremely successful campaign held by the not-for-profit organization that resulted in 12,155 pounds of reusable items being collected by volunteers in a two-day initiative.

In an effort to divert waste from the local landfill, the Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay ReStore partnered with the City of Thunder Bay during Free Dump Week to collect unwanted items at the Solid Waste Management Facility.

Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay CEO Diane Mitchell says, “Our team collected a staggering amount of material that was originally destined for the dump. The landfill isn’t the only option when disposing unwanted items. Items collected during Free Dump Week will be used to generate thousands of dollars in revenue to assist Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay build homes for families in need. Donating to the ReStore is an environmentally friendly and socially conscious alternative to generating unnecessary waste.”

Habitat for Humanity ReStore accepts donations of new and gently used items including furniture, appliances, cabinetry, hardware, and paint. These items are then sold at a forty to seventy percent discount from retail prices. In addition to receiving donations at the ReStore location, the Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay ReStore Salvage Program provides free collection services including teardown, removal, and pick-up of materials. Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay New Business Development Manager, Keith MacMillan says; “Our Salvage Program team can safely deconstruct flooring, siding, and have even disassembled entire kitchens to salvage materials. Our team hopes to keep the momentum generated from Free Dump Week going, and we encourage the people of Thunder Bay to think of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore not only when they are doing home renovations, but during their annual spring clean.”
