THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Weather is causing a delay in the last flight from Kashechewan tonight. Deputy Chief Amos Wesley reports, “Hercules Flights scheduled starting at 10pm has been postponed due to weather. The flights will be here at 9AM in the morning.”
Fort Albany is experiencing periods of rain ending this evening. Conditions will then shift to cloudy with a 60 percent chance of flurries. Winds northwest 20 km/h becoming light late this evening. Low tonight minus 2.
“Thunder Bay received about 140 Kashechewan residents during the first round of evacuations, which began on Saturday afternoon,” said Deputy Fire Chief Dave Paxton. “We are on schedule to receive the remainder of the 600 evacuees throughout the day on Sunday. Everything is proceeding as expected.”
Evacuees have been arriving in Thunder Bay through the day, and are being transported to the Victoria Inn on Arthur Street.
James Bay Member of Parliament Charlie Angus says, “There is now a full scale evacuation underway in Kashechewan. The nurses station has been shut because of sewage. 40 homes are flooded, the same 40 houses that were damaged in last year’s flood”.
