ROME – Authorities are reporting that the start of the Italian Cup soccer final match between Napoli and Fiorentina was delayed on Saturday (May 3) after violent clashes near Rome’s Olympic stadium.

The clashes took place in the Tor di Quinto area close to the stadium. The problem started when rival supporters started to throw firecrackers and other objects at each other ahead of the game.

The game was delayed for forty-five minutes.

Reuters reports that “In another incident before the match, three Napoli fans were shot. One of the men was taken to hospital in a critical condition after being hit in the chest, while two others who had been shot in the arm were also treated in hospital. The pistol used in the incidents has been found by the police, the AGI and ANSA news agency said”.

Police in a statement commented that the three shootings do not appear to be linked to the other incidents in the Tor di Quinto area.
