THUNDER BAY – Representatives of 100 Canadian municipalities will be in Thunder Bay this week when the City hosts the Spring Meeting of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Board.

“We’re proud to have been chosen to host these important events,” said Mayor Keith Hobbs. “I’m looking forward to the meetings and the discussions that will take place with a broad representation of Canadian municipalities.”

The Spring Meeting is expected to include committee meetings, as well as discussions on larger issues including the new Building Canada Fund, rail safety, a Canadian Housing Strategy, as well as the next federal election, currently scheduled to take place in 2015.

“These are important issues that affect us all,” said Councillor Linda Rydholm, Thunder Bay’s representative on the FCM board. “There is a need for us, as Canadian municipalities, to work together toward a better future for each one of our citizens. FCM is a vehicle that allows that – by standing alongside our fellow cities, we can join our voices as one and ensure we’re heard by other orders of government.”

Women in Politics

FCM members will also participate in a Women in Politics session in Thunder Bay on March 8, which aligns with International Women’s Day.

The Women in Politics session will run from 1-4:30 pm, at the Valhalla Inn. It will include addresses by elected women from other Canadian communities who are attending the FCM Spring Meeting in Thunder Bay. A Question and Answer Period and Roundtable Discussion are also on the agenda. Interested politicians, candidates, and their supporters can register at paro.ca, and admission is $15.

“This will be an exciting, informative and inspiring event,” said Thunder Bay City Councillor Rebecca Johnson. “I’m pleased these elected women are going to join us to share their stories and experiences. Our goal is to get more women involved in politics, and this is a wonderful way to do just that. It’s very appropriate to be holding this session on International Women’s Day.”

The Women in Politics Session will be carried live on NetNewsLedger.com
