MADISON, Wis. – Each of the three Thunder Bay Queens clubs competing at the CAN/AM Cup tournament in Madison, Wis., will play for medals Sunday.
The Triad Contracting peewees will go for the gold medal while the First Class Gas bantam AA and Norcan Tours and Travel midget A sides will vie for the bronze in their respective divisions.
The peewees will take on unbeaten Edina Green of Minnesota at 10:45 a.m. in the title game.
As for the bantams they’ll take to the ice at noon vs. Team Illinois and the midget A Queens go up against either the Madison Capitols or Milwaukee Jr. Admirals at 8:30 a.m. with third place on the line.
Wrapping up round robin play Saturday the FCG bantam AA side had a win and a loss while the Triad Contracting peewee Queens skated to a tie in their lone contest and the Norcan Tours and Travel midget A’s had a draw and a loss in a pair of outings.
Game 1 of the day for the bantam AA’s saw them drop a 4-1 decision to Team Illinois.
The Illinois squad jumped out a 3-1 lead after one period and added one final tally midway through the third to round out the scoring.
Madeline Browczuk had the lone goal for Thunder Bay with Kaylee Grosjean assisted on the play.
Shots on goal favoured the winners 23-20 with Alyssa Aho suffering the setback in net.
The Queens bounced back in a big way in their second match-up Saturday as Makenna Burke stopped all 13 shots she faced in a 5-0 shutout over Madison.
A pair of markers late in the first period sent Thunder Bay on their way as Alyssa Cicigoi and Jayda MacArthur both found the back of the net.
The second stanza saw Emilie Varrin extend the cushion as she finished off a feed from Grosjean.
The bantam AA side put the game away in the final frame receiving efforts from Grosjean and Browczuk to round out the scoring. Karadyn Kiviaho had an assist on the Grosjean tally in a game that saw them fire 33 shots on the Madison net.
As for the peewee Queens their lone contest Saturday saw them battle to a 1-1 result vs. St. Louis in a prelude to the gold medal game.
The Lady Blues struck quickly in this one scoring just 10 seconds after the opening face-off.
Thunder Bay responded 10 minutes later with the final goal of the game as Dayna Doucet buried a pass from Carly Hennessey.
Josee Robinson was in net for the tie helping her side earn a point.
Meanwhile the Norcan Tours midget A Queens began the day rallying for a 3-3 result against Madison before falling 7-3 to the Chicago Fury in evening play.
Against the Capitols Thunder Bay fell behind 2-0 after one before Jordyn Paris cut into the deficit with the lone marker of the middle frame.
Setting up the goal were Laura Deschamps and goaltender Bailey Chenier.
After Madison went back up by two early in the third the Queens got tallies from Allison Pages and Deschamps to pull the club into the draw.
In the game vs. Chicago it was a good start as Whitney Scott put the squad up early only to see Chicago’s Taylor House score five times in a row as part of the Fury going up 6-1 through two periods of play.
The final frame saw the midget A’s sandwich goals by Kristin Martin and Pages around another by Chicago to wrap up the scoring.
Brooke Basaraba was in net for the loss.
