THUNDER BAY – Entertainment – The Volunteer Thunder Bay “Sunshine Greeting Card Project” will helps bring joy and celebration to some of our city’s’ frailest and most isolated seniors.
Our first set of cards are scheduled to go this Friday February 14th for Valentine’s Day. The first recipients will be clients of the Meals on Wheels program. 10 high school students from across the city handmade over 150 valentine cards in hopes to bring a smile to a deserving elder. A program Volunteer Thunder Bay plans to keep around year round presenting cards at random through various organizations and locations.
The idea came from one of our ChangeTheWorld Student Ambassadors, Nicole Anderson, a student at Westgate High who sits on the community and helps plan volunteer and fundraising events for the 6-week Ontario Government challenge.
“It was such a touching and great idea that we started on the project right away” says Deborah Poole-Hofmann Executive Director of Volunteer Thunder Bay. “The response from agencies and students alike have been extremely positive and we plan to run the program year round not only for students to volunteer with but families too.”
Here’s how you can help make a card:
- Donations of card stock, glue and other craft supplies will be gladly accepted
- Volunteer as a student or a family to help make cards – monthly session will be posted on the web site
Come and see the Sunshine Greeting Card Project volunteers collect and make cards during the Thunder Bay Business Women’s Network Women’s Expo on Saturday March 1st at the CLE Coliseum between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm.
