Thunder Bay into the Deep Freeze

THUNDER BAY – News – Bundle up! Simply put it is cold. While the mercury has plunged to low parts of the thermometer, the real issue will be the wind. Cold Arctic air is set to pour into much of Northern Ontario bringing cold temperatures and wind chill warnings and advisories into effect.

Washaho Cree Nation – Fort Severn is expected to bear the coldest temperatures. Extreme wind chills of minus 45 to minus 55 this morning are expected.

Bitterly cold Arctic air combined with moderate west winds have resulted in extreme wind chills of minus 45 to minus 50 across much of Far Northern Ontario early this morning. A few locales may experience wind chills in the minus 50 to minus 55 range.

The extreme wind chills could last into early next week as bitterly cold Arctic air continues to get ushered in from the northwest.

Caution is advised for people heading outdoors. Exposed skin may freeze in less than 5 minutes.

Road Conditions

Road Conditions on area highways are generally good. There are snowpacked conditions on Highway 17 heading north from Thunder Bay into Nipigon. Heading west drivers will encounter slippery sections on the roads as they hit Ignace.

In Thunder Bay, city crews have been out clearing major roadways overnight. Side streets and residential street clearing will follow.
