gold barsTORONTO – Mining News – Surprise exits at Barrick Gold.

Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX)(TSX:ABX) have announced that two directors, Donald Carty and Robert Franklin resigned from the company’s Board of Directors effective immediately. Mr. Carty and Mr. Franklin were previously directors of Placer Dome and joined the Barrick Board in 2006 in conjunction with the completion of Barrick’s acquisition of Placer Dome.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Don and Rob for their service,” said Peter Munk, Founder and Chairman of Barrick Gold. “We greatly appreciate their contributions to the company.”

Barrick Gold earlier announced other changes at the Board of Directors in December.

Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, along with Howard Beck are stepping back from the board.

Ned Goodman of Dundee Corp., Nancy Lockhart of Frum Development Group, former University of Toronto president David Naylor and Ernie Thrasher, CEO of Xcoal Energy & Resources were appointed to the Barrick Gold board earlier in December.

In a statement the gold giant said James Gowans, the former CEO of diamond giant De Beers’ Canada unit takes up the position of chief operating officer in January.
