THUNDER BAY – Music and Film in Motion (MFM) is pleased to announce its next workshops from the InSight and Sound Seminar Series in Thunder Bay. “Into the Great Wide Open” will be on Thursday, November 25th from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and “Managing Your Expectations: Indie Film Realities” will take place on the same day from 7:45 to 9:15 p.m.
“Into the Great Wide Open” explores how being a musician in a Northern Ontario town always leaves one wondering how they can break out of their region and start making some real noise. You spent all of this time teaching yourself how to play, now learn from the pros what it really takes to break out, grab the attention of the pros and make a living doing what you do best. The session will be instructed by Derek Brin and Helen Britton. Derek is a Multi-Platinum Award winning Music Producer & Composer who has worked in Canada, the Caribbean and internationally producing both records and music for media. Helen is the heart and anchor of Six Shooter. For the past seven years as Vice President, Helen has helped to develop Six Shooter into an internationally recognized company, as well as the careers of such outstanding artists such as Shout Out Out Out Out, Luke Doucet and Juno Award winner Amelia Curran.
“Managing Your Expectations: Indie Film Realities” will explore how navigating the realities of the independent film world can be tricky business. Join a panel of seasoned filmmakers who will bring expectations about the industry into focus. From pitching to financing to distributing your projects to working in Northern Ontario, learn how managing expectations can lead to creative solutions and success on your own terms. The session will be instructed by Paul Stephens and William Barron. Paul and his production company The Film Works have a demonstrated ability to bring big budget, high-quality Canadian productions to screens both big and small. Most recently, The Film Works completed the feature film Oliver Sherman which was shot in North Bay. William is the lead analyst of business affairs in Ontario and Nunavut regions for Telefilm Canada. Telefilm Canada is a Crown Corporation that’s mandate is to promote and foster a film industry in Canada through the judicious investment of public funds in the sector.
The sessions, free for members and $5 for non-members, will be taking place at the Victoria Inn, located at 555 West Arthur Street in Thunder Bay.
