Cancer Care Grant Helps Sioux Lookout
SIOUX LOOKOUT – Healthbeat – On Wednesday, November 13, members of the Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre team were on hand to accept a grant for $9,435 from the Northern Cancer Fund of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation to fund the purchase of new equipment for chemotherapy. The grant was made possible thanks to generous donors to the Northern Cancer Fund.
Glenn Craig, President & CEO, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, who presented the grant remarked, “Philanthropic support from people across Northwestern Ontario, including those in Sioux Lookout, ensure that we are able to strengthen our cancer program and provide exceptional cancer care close to home. On October 10, we launched our Exceptional Cancer Care Campaign to raise $5.9 million for our Cancer Centre and its 13 satellite sites. This investment in chemotherapy equipment is part of our commitment to our community to ensure that no matter where cancer treatment is provided, it is of the highest quality.”
“We’re thrilled to be the recipient of this grant that will specifically be used to purchase a new triple channel IV pump, used to provide close-to-home chemotherapy,” remarked Heather Shepherd, Vice President, Health Services and Chief Nursing Officer, Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre. “Ensuring safe administration of chemotherapy is obviously of utmost priority and we are proud of our ability to do so in Sioux Lookout, so that patients can benefit from the support they receive from their families and community.”
This grant represents an ongoing commitment by the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation to provide exceptional healthcare for patients in Sioux Lookout and surrounding communities. Previously, between 2005 and 2011, $74,559 has been provided to the Health Centre to fund chemotherapy equipment, along with a Tandberg unit for Telemedicine and funding for a new hemodialysis machine. This new grant brings the 8-year total of investments to $83,994. None of it would have been possible without the community’s continued support of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, and, in particular, the Northern Cancer Fund.
