Championship Curling Starts Saturday in Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY – The Dominion Curling Championships are less than a week away. The 200 plus volunteers involved with the The Dominion Curling Club Championships will be active this week as the Fort William Curling Club will be a hub of activity setting up to host this national championship for club curlers.

Dominion Curling ChampionshipsåçRight now, there are trucks to unload, trailers to set up, ice preparations along with logistics to accommodate the visiting curlers.

There are over one hundred curlers heading to Thunder Bay to compete. They represent all 10 provinces, three Territories and of course Northern Ontario in men’s and women’s divisions start arriving in Thunder Bay on Saturday. The competitions to determine the Canadian titles will get underway with two draws on Monday.

The Valhalla Inn is the host hotel for the event, but with a large number of family and friends. Competitors and fans traveling to Thunder Bay: Extra rooms have been booked at the Victoria Inn, and Days Inn to accommodate the extra visitors to the city.

Kathie Jackson and her rink of Teresa McFayden, Lisa Penner, and Kris Sinclair representing Northern Ontario are expected to attract a number of followers from their hometown of Fort Frances and will also draw local support with Jackson rink’s connection to Thunder Bay. The Northern Ontario men’s team from Sudbury skipped by Jason Strelezki will also have local allegiances to the green and gold as the Copper Cliff Curling Club rink play for a Canadian title in their home province.
