Iconic Thunder Bay Landmark Needs Support

THUNDER BAY – The iconic lighthouse on the break wall in Thunder Bay faces an uncertain future.

Paul Morralee states, “When you look towards the Sleeping Giant it is often hard to miss an important landmark, the Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse. Built some seventy- years ago, and resting upon the break-wall, it still remains on its perch, even after the MV Simco ran into it, some forty-years ago”.

“And now history is coming back to haunt this an icon of Thunder Bay. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), a Government of Canada Department, has deemed the lighthouse structure as surplus. This means that the structure could be remove in the near future. DFO, no longer wishes to manage and maintain the structure,” shares Morralee.

“The light and fog horn is the responsibility of the Canadian Coast Guard and will remain. The Canadian Lighthouses of Lake Superior (CLoLS) organization (formerly, Friends of Trowbridge Group) wants to preserve regional lighthouses, but they need support from the community to continue moving forward”.

Morralee is asking, “Can you do your bit to help preserve the structure for future public access?
