THUNDER BAY – TAKE BACK THE NIGHT organized by Lakehead University Student Union’s Gender Issues Centre will be onThursday, October 24, 2013 at 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM at St. Paul’s United Church (349 Waverley St.). This grassroots movement and protest raises awareness about the ongoing issue of violence against women in Canada and the world.
Women-identified people will march from the Church at 6:20 PM and return for approximately 7:00 PM. Upon return, people can enjoy light refreshments and expect performances by spoken word poet, Holly Painter from London, ON; Jen Metcalfe (Jen’s Bent); Jayal Chung and Uko Abara; Speakers from community organizations include: Melody McGregor, Follow Up Outreach Nurse Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence Treatment Centre of Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Most importantly, survivors are encouraged to speak out.
This evening is for everyone in the community to make a statement of solidarity that violence against each other is unacceptable. Visual displays include: Information from community organizations, Faceless Dolls Project (Aboriginal Awareness Centre), The Clothesline Project and The Wall Project.
As a community, let us come together to show support and continue to work towards ending violence. We each have a voice, and we can use it.
