Lakehead ThunderwolvesTHUNDER BAY – Lakehead Sports – The Thunderwolves women’s basketball team kept a perfect record through the John Zanatta Invitational, and are now 3-0 in the pre-season, following a 66-61 win over the Manitoba Bisons.

Lakehead University Coach Jon Kreiner said, “We’ve improved every game and tonight we played much better defence in the second half and closed the game out a little better then last night. We still have a long way to go but I am very proud of our team. Essa Jacobsen was a beast tonight and Ayse Kalkan dominated the boards. Ayse was a point shy of the double double and Essa one rebound shy but they were a great force. Lindsay Inkila was our best bench player hitting a key three late in the game while Katie Ulakovic had her best game orchestrating the offense tonight. We will see Manitoba  again next weekend at the Winnipeg tournament as well as Winnipeg and Brandon.”

In their third game in as many days, the Thundewolves needed to dig deep in order to get the win, relying heavily on post Essa Jacobsen to do a lot of scoring, not to mention rebounding. The Grand Marais, Minnesota native finished with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
Ayse Kalkan was all over the glass, grabbing 14 rebounds (5 offensive) to go with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Katie Ulakovic scored 12 points with 4 assists.
For the Bisons, Robyn Eyer led with 14 points, while Stephanie Gill scored 10.
The Manitoba Bisons will play their final game of the weekend tomorrow morning at 10am against Laurentian.
The Thunderwolves travel to Winnipeg next weekend for an exhibition tournament hosted by the University of Winnipeg.
