NIPIGON – On Saturday night at the Nipigon Community Centre the Elks hosted their home opener. They were playing host to the new team Thunder Bay Screaming Eagles. Before the start of the game Moriah Harvey delighted the crowd by singing O’Canada.
The first period saw both teams trying to feel each other out. Both teams each got a goal in the period. Scoring for the Screaming Eagles was Charlie DeBungee, while Mitch Kerr scored the Nipigon goal. Nipigon out-shot the visitors 15-6.
The second period was all Elks. Nipigon out-scored the Eagles 5-0. Scoring for the Elks were Jessie Assunmaa, Mitch Kerr (his second), Brandon Polhill, Cole Saunders and Nick Parry. The Eagles were soundly out shot in the second period. Nipigon out-shot the Eagles 23-7 for a two period total of 38-13. The Eagles Kyle Anderson was ejected from the game in the second period for his third stick infraction.
The Elks had their way in the third period too. Cole Saunders and Jessie Assunmaa scoring both their second goal put the Elks up 9-1. Charlie DeBungee scored for the Eagles to make the score 9-2. Brodie Biosiol scored the last goal for Nipigon. Nipigon once again out-shot the Eagles 24-8 for a three period tptal of 62- 21.
Mitch Kerr, Jessie Assunmaa and Cole Saunders led the Elks attack with two goals each, while the single goals went to Brandon Polhill, Nick Parry, Zach Nuttal and Brodie Biasiol. Charlie DeBungee scored both Eagles goals.
Nipigon’s next game is Tuesday night at the Tournament Centre, when the will be playing against the Northern Hawks. Their next home game is on the 15th when they play against the Junior B Stars at 7:30pm.
